Reach for the Sun | Australian Shepherd Painting

This Australian Shepherd dog gives new meaning to the phrase "Reach for the Sun". Don't just REACH...dive in and grab it! That's what we truly have to do in order to meet our goals, isn't it? :)

Reach for the Sun is available as fine art prints, cards, and on numerous fun gifts. It's the perfect art to remind us all that we have to move beyond just reaching.

First Light | Magnolia Painting | TBA Winner

Wow, what a busy week! Lots going on this week, but I still found time to get outside and photograph some of our spring blooms.

This is a painting of one of our pink magnolia blossoms in my neighbor's yard. I titled it "First Light", as the sun gently poured over the petals, giving the flower a sweet yellow glow.

And I was quite honored to receive a Today's Best Award from Zazzle.Com yesterday for this piece of art.

Hopefully with the spring season upon us, I'll have more floral paintings to offer. You can order prints and merchandise of First Light from my website. The mugs with this image are exceptionally beautiful, and would make a great Mother's Day gift. I also designed a Mother's Day card. :)

Snow Play | Newfoundland Puppy Painting

Last week I received a really fun photo submission for my Dogs With Toys series. I knew as soon as I saw this precious Newfie, he would be the subject of a painting.

His owner explained that while 9 week old McKinley wasn't shown with a toy, he is shown with one of his favorite play things...the SNOW! Perfect. I love the look on his face.

And only 9 weeks old? Good golly, this is going to be one BIG dog. His owner said at the time of this painting, McKinley is now five months old and weighs 62 pounds. Yes - he will be a big boy when he's full grown. His owner, Scot, also says, "He has a wonderful heart, is very docile, playful and mischievous. He has an older brother (a rescue mutt) who he loves to play with and shares the house with two older cats, who are not at all thrilled with his youthful vigor."

Thank you Scot, for submitting McKinley for me to paint. He makes an excellent addition to the Dogs With Toys series!

For Newfoundland and other dog aficionados, fine art prints, cards, and other fun gifts with McKinley's painting can be ordered from the website.

The time has come

I hated to make this announcement this week- but unfortunately the time has come. My studio expenses have increased over the past year, and I've held off on raising prices - but there comes a time when I simply can't ignore it anymore. That time has come.

Prices on custom pet paintings and on limited edition prints will go up on April 12, 2010. I've tried to give enough notice so those of you who are teetering on the edge of ordering will have ample time to secure your custom pet portrait or make your purchase of a limited edition prior to the increase.

Since Zazzle has been producing more sales than anticipated, the prices on my art merchandise there will remain the same - at least until the end of the year and then the shop will be reviewed.

So - here's your chance - if you've been thinking about having a custom pet portrait created, now's the time! My pet portraits (as shown in the photo here) are available on 3 canvas sizes: mini, medium and large. They make awesome gifts for yourself or someone else. In fact, the commission art I've just completed is going to be a Mother's Day gift for a very special lady. Mother's Day is May 9, 2010, so there's plenty of time to have a custom pet portrait created of your mom's favorite dog, cat, bird, or other pet before the big day!

Be Strong | White Squirrel Photo

In addition to painting, I also spend quite a bit of time on my photography. This morning I've been waiting to hear back from a client who commissioned a painting of Archie the Japanese Chin, and in the meantime, I decided to finally create a design with my photo of our neighborhood white squirrel. It's amazing what inspiration can come from these wild creatures. Immediately when I saw the photo of this albino squirrel with his front paws in the position they are, I thought of "Be Strong". Above is one of the products available in my Zazzle shop. To see all the products with this little fella, visit his very own section in my gallery.

Lion Portrait

Lions are my favorite "big cats". Perhaps because my birthday is in August, and I'm a Leo. :) Or it could be that I just love the regal nature of this wild cat, and I aspire to have the calm, confident, and secure nature these creatures seem to exude.

In my living room hangs a neat piece of lion artwork - not created by me. Ever since it's been there, I've want to create a painting worthy of comparison, which features a lion. I'm pleased enough with this painting, I believe it can easily hang in concert with the other, and the two will compliment each other exquisitely!

Fine art prints, cards, and other gifts featuring this lion portrait are available from my website.

United | A Pair of Cherries

Sometimes before I begin an animal portrait, I'll do what I call a simple warm-up painting. Not always...but sometimes. Especially if I'm feeling stressed or frustrated...the warm-up helps me loosen up. Most of the time I don't publish my warm-up paintings, but this time, I really liked the way this cherry painting came out so I decided to offer it.

I've titled the painting "United", as the two cherries are still connected by at the top of their stems. It's a simple painting, with a powerful punch thanks to the dark background I chose, which makes the red cherry color pop even more. Dramatic, I guess is the way I'd describe this painting. Gee, kind of sounds like my life sometimes! :)

Fine art prints, cards and other fun gifts with this art are available on my still life page on the website.

Little Cheerleader | Pomeranian Painting

Nine year old Willow, a Pomeranian, is a tiny fluffball. She belongs to a neighbor and despite her small size in our big world, whenever she's outside, she makes a big statement.

I photographed Willow last year, but she had short hair then. (summer haircut) I was lucky enough to be able to photograph her again recently, with her full fur coat that I feel makes her so precious.

The same day I was photographing Willow, I was also photographing another family playmate - a black Lab named Sam who was playing with a red, white, and blue ball.

In Willow's photo, there was no ball. She was actually dancing around her master's feet. I knew the pose would make for a really cute painting, however I wanted her to have a toy so I could include her in my Dogs With Toys series of art. So I painted Sam's ball in with Willow for her painting. And this is the result! Fine art prints and a variety of fun artsy gifts are available from my website. (hint...they make wonderful gifts for Pomeranian dog owners!)

Gentle Soul, A Newfoundland dog painting

I've titled this painting of the Newfoundland dog Shamus "Gentle Soul". His owner, Kim Clune, referred to him as "the gentlest of souls" in her email to me when she submitted his photo for my Dogs With Toys painting series.

Shamus is shown here in my painting based on Kim's photo of him with a favorite toy. This gorgeous animal was adopted by Kim and her husband in March of 2oo9. You can read how they found Shamus and more about him here.

After watching his videos on the website, he truly does seem to fit the title of "Gentle Soul".

Our Cry Wolf Painting

I finally finished my wolf montage painting. I titled it "Our Cry", after reading a poem about wolves, and how their howl is their cry for their family members which were killed by man. It's quite sad, that the lives of this beautiful creature would be so senselessly taken as they have been. I hope I've done the wolf justice with my painting.

This wolf painting is available on prints, cards, shirts, mugs and many other gift items here.

Eye of the Wolf

I've been feeling challenged this week to work on a montage painting. I've chosen the wolf to feature, because as a teen I had a fabulous t-shirt I loved, with a wolf montage design. Remembering that, and how much I loved the art on that shirt, encouraged me to attempt one of my own.

It's slow going so far. I've spent the last hour working one wolf's eye. Using my palette knife tool, I'm laying in the paint colors and playing with a little blending. I'm not sure I'm satisfied yet, but I'm closer than I was an hour ago!

I'd love to have this painting finished by the end of the weekend, but I have a feeling it might take longer than expected.

German Shepherd Painting

I hope you guys don't get tired of my German Shepherd paintings. Max is my built-in model, and I love to do paintings of him!

This is a traditional portrait of him which I completed yesterday. Since he has a lot of blue colors present in his fur, I painted him with a simple blue background.

Actually I planned on making this a montage painting, with two other views of him in addition to this close up face view. Unfortunately, I messed something up and it didn't work the way I planned...so I'll have to try that project again sometime. In the meantime, I'm pleased with this head portrait of him. He looks very regal. :)

When is the last time you mailed a hand written letter?

I have hand written cards in the past few years, but I honestly can't remember the last time I sent a hand written letter. The new stationery I'm creating with my art as a focal point is encouraging me to re-enter this lost art of letter writing.

According to some reports, handwritten letters are among the top 25 things disappearing in America today. I can remember as a child, I had several pen pals in other countries. I used to get so excited when I'd receive a letter from another country! The paper was different, the envelope unique. I still have a stack of letters from my high school best friends, and from a few "first loves". It's nice to look back at them. They seem so much more personal and real than emails, tweets and Facebook messages.

At the beginning of this year, I decided to do something different...something which would mean something to someone. I think I'll spend some time hand writing letters over the rest of this year. This thing I used to enjoy so much doesn't have to be lost - it can be revived, with in a simple way - by just DOING IT. :)

I've spent the morning making a few designs for my Zazzle shop. All are totally customizable and I've made it easy so all my customers have to do is type their information in the appropriate boxes. Now my decision is which one to order for myself? I love them all! Since a 55% savings comes into play when ordering 100 sheets, maybe I'll order 10 of each design, so I can have a variety. Then I'll have to make a pact with myself to send out 100 letters. :) I bet it would surprise some folks. I know I'd certainly be surprised if I received a hand written letter in the mail. In fact, it would actually be very nice! I think I'll go for it...and I'll order matching stamps too. :)

Dixie Lane Magnolia Painting

In a rush today...must go to job #2. Before I left, I wanted to finish this flower painting.

Down at the other end of Dixie Lane, there is a gorgeous magnolia tree, which makes the largest blooms I've ever seen! This is a painting of one single bloom, its beauty now forever preserved. :)

Canvas prints, cards, gifts, etc are available via my website.

White German Shepherd Portrait

My day's all screwed up today. Had a schedule change and for those of you who know me well, you know I freak a little bit when my routine gets messed up. I could have gone and worked at the pet store today, but it would have rushed me too much the entire day, and I don't feel I'd have done a good job. So I shifted things around to be able to go work tomorrow.

As a result, this gave me extra time today to paint. Since I hadn't planned on painting today, I didn't have a subject ready. Don't get me wrong - I have lots of subjects as many have sent me photos to be included as paintings in the Dogs With Toys series! However, I have to mentally prepare myself to paint, and I do that by studying my subject's photo(s) for quite some time before I ever start. It gives me a feel for the personality of the animal if I do that.

Today was different...I hadn't mentally prepared for one particular pet. So I went through my old photo archive with the intent to paint the dog who spoke to me. This white German Shepherd spoke to me in my heart, so he finally had his painting done today. :)

I thought you might enjoy a couple of in progress photos and explain a little about my digital painting method for these paintings.

My first step is to block in colors using palette knives of varying sizes (smaller for detail areas such as the eyes where I want to be very precise, and larger for the background and dog's fur). I do this very quickly, and very choppy, just enough to get the basic forms, shapes and colored areas laid out.

After I've done this, then I blend the paint. I don't blend all areas, as the hard edges from the palette knife give the illusion of fur and separation where I need it. So I blend some areas, and leave other areas alone, until I get the look I want.

I've shared a couple of close ups here so you can see the difference before blending and after.

After I'm satisfied with the main blending, then I use a softer and finer blender to soften some areas, and create tiny wisps of fur in just a few spots. It gives the dog's painting more of a sense of realism, without getting too realistic with my portrayal. My goal with these new paintings is to lighten up, work faster, and maintain a looser, more painterly, style than my realistic work possesses. I often find myself slipping into "realism" mode, striving to get a certain piece of fur as accurate as I can. It's at that point I stand up and walk away for a few minutes...that helps me to get out of that mode before it overtakes me. :)

And finally, the painting is finished.

Tug of War Cavalier King Charles Spaniels Painting

On of my twitter friends contributed an adorable image of her two Cavalier King Charles Spaniels playing with a toy for my "Dogs With Toys" series.

This is Henry and George, playing tug of war with each other - one of their favorite things to do, according to their owner.

I found it interesting creating this painting which is focused on the dogs from above. I kind of like the unique look which ensued due to the different angle of focus. This is a fun image, not just for Cavalier owners, but for all dog lovers who enjoy watching their dogs have fun with their playthings. :)

Anticipating Christmas

Is my dog the only one who picks a strange item for a favorite toy?

My 11 year old mixed breed dog, Lady, has chosen a small red Santa hat for her favorite toy. I'm assuming at one point it was on a stuffed animal. She is absolutely obsessed with it! We had to remove the cotton ball from the tip of the hat, as we were afraid she'd swallow it.

This painting is titled "Anticipating Christmas", as we feel Lady wants it to be Christmas year-round, and that's why she chose the hat for her favorite toy.

The painting is part of my "Dogs With Toys" series of artwork. If you'd like to submit your dog for inclusion in the series, please read my news page to see how you can do so.

My Yellow Friend German Shepherd Painting

Yesterday I finished this painting of Max, my German Shepherd, with his favorite toy - a stuffed Garfield. He's slept with this toy since he was 10 weeks old. He carries it with him *everywhere*. If he gets nervous, the first thing he does is find his Garfield and snatch him up. It's like a security blanket to him, and is truly his best friend.

This painting titled "My Yellow Friend" is part of my new series I'm working on this month titled "Dogs With Toys". Your dog could be chosen for the series! Read my news page to see how.

And here's an extra treat for my blog visitors today. I finally captured some photos of a couple of our bluebirds. I've been trying for a few months to photograph them. I still wish I'd have been able to get closer to them, but these are some fun shots anyway. Hope you enjoy seeing them!
